Bible Reading
Jeremiah 51:52-64
52 Wherefore, behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will do judgment upon her graven images: and through all her land the wounded shall groan.
53 Though Babylon should mount up to heaven, and though she should fortify the height of her strength, yet from me shall spoilers come unto her, saith the Lord.
54 A sound of a cry cometh from Babylon, and great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans:
55 Because the Lord hath spoiled Babylon, and destroyed out of her the great voice; when her waves do roar like great waters, a noise of their voice is uttered:
56 Because the spoiler is come upon her, even upon Babylon, and her mighty men are taken, every one of their bows is broken: for the Lord God of recompences shall surely requite.
57 And I will make drunk her princes, and her wise men, her captains, and her rulers, and her mighty men: and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, saith the King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
58 Thus saith the Lord of hosts; The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly broken, and her high gates shall be burned with fire; and the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary.
59 The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah, the son of Maaseiah, when he went with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign. And this Seraiah was a quiet prince.
60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, even all these words that are written against Babylon.
61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah, When thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words;
62 Then shalt thou say, O Lord, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, neither man nor beast, but that it shall be desolate for ever.
63 And it shall be, when thou hast made an end of reading this book, that thou shalt bind a stone to it, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates:
64 And thou shalt say, Thus shall Babylon sink, and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her: and they shall be weary. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.
Questions for Meditation

►Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
►Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 May 2026 | Outline
Are you worried about how the systems of the world are deliberately opposed to God and His rule, how they oppress God’s people with impunity, while God seems to be watching helplessly? This passage demonstrates that no matter how advanced and sophisticated the world system, like Babylon, it will be permanently exterminated (Jeremiah 51:52-53). We should not lose hope when we face overwhelming opposition and persecution from the world because of our faith (Romans 12:19).
God has authority over everything, and He will overthrow all evils at the right time and avenge all the wrong done to His people (Jeremiah 51:56). The sound of Babylon’s fall would echo throughout the whole world, symbolizing the end of its might and pride (Jeremiah 51:54-55).
Read Jeremiah 51:57-58 again and observe what God would do to the officials, wise men, and warriors, the wall and gates that Babylon depends upon for defence. By the dramatic sign-act in Jeremiah 51:59-64, Jeremiah puts finality on Babylon’s irreparable fall. It shows that Jeremiah believed, without doubt, that his prophecies would be fulfilled but when and how was in God’s control. Today, we can testify that it was fulfilled.
What Next?
Are you overwhelmed by the evil around you and contemplating to throw in the towel? Do not despair! God’s plans and Kingdom shall prevail, and all evil will ultimately be vanquished.
