Scripture Union Daily Guide 11 July 2026 – OUTLINE
Authority is essential for a well-ordered society. There is no debate in following orders in the military. Our society has hatred for authority. We may not like the decision of those in authority, but there are authoritative relationships that most people do not question – parents. Our society understands the authority of certain systems, but what about the Church? What authority does the church have over someone’s life?
Jesus established His authority through preaching and teaching (Luke 20:1; Luke 4:42-44; Matthew 28:18) which the religious leaders hate. They questioned His authority regarding the cleansing of the temple and His miraculous works (Luke 19:45-48; Luke 20:1-2). How do you respond to Jesus’ teaching/authority – like the religious leaders or the people? Many pay lip service to His authority (Luke 6:46-49).
Jesus’ challenge helps expose their lack of trust in His authority (Luke 20:3-8). Their judgement of John, the witness to His authority, was wrong. John’s authority is either from God or man. The Church is faced with one question today, “Is the Bible from God or from man”? Since the religious leaders were insincere, Jesus has no reason to give them an answer.
Reflection
