Scripture Union Daily Guide 10th March 2021 Wednesday Message
Topic: God’s Commandments are not Burdensome
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.
Scripture: Deuteronomy 30: 1-20
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for? • Is there any warning for me to heed?
God, in his sovereignty, knew that Israel would break the covenant and be taken into exile. Built into the law, therefore, was a mechanism for repentance and renewal (v.1ff, cf. Isaiah 55:7). God’s arms are ever opened to receive the repentant sinner. Whatever depth we have reached, He forgives and restores us to Himself. Moses assured his people of God’s constant presence with them (vs.3-6).
God’s promise to the patriarchs to give their descendants the Promised Land remains sure. He promises to change their hearts, replacing their spiritual insensitivity and stubbornness with a new will to obey the LORD. See v.6 for the reason. What an expression of love! Notice what becomes of their enemies in v.7. The curses that had fallen on Israel because of their disobedience will be put on the nations that “hate and persecute (them)”.
Today, God’s word is even closer to us (vs.11-14). We have the Bible. We can read and meditate on it each day to receive God’s direction. In addition, we have God’s Spirit who enlightens our hearts to understand His word and gives power to act on it. The fruit of obedience is life in abundance, but rejection leads to death and destruction.
