TOPIC: What Do You Have?

OPENING PRAYER: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

SCRIPTURE: 2 King 4:1-7

QUESTION FOR REFLECTION
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

MESSAGE: Take note that the widow’s husband, though a faithful prophet of God, died in debt and made the family vulnerable (v.1). The widow did not keep her problem to herself. She came to Elisha, as a leader, for help. What can we learn from this? If she could not get help, the creditor could keep her children in servitude for up to 6 years (Deuteronomy 15:12). Many poor families in our society, including the families of pastors and missionaries, are going through similar situation. Their children are out of school and lack basic necessities of life because their families are poor. God depends on us to give needed help to the poor among us.

Elisha used what the family had to meet their need (v.2). Most of the time, people think that they don’t have anything, or they don’t appreciate what they have. The widow never knew that the little oil she had would be the solution to her problem (cf. Matthew 15:32-38). We may not have money to give people who come to us for help, but we can help them to discover what they have (skills, talents, connections, etc) that they can use to solve their problems and move out of poverty.

What other lessons can we learn from the widow in vs.3-7?

Practice/Word Application
