Scripture Reading
Matthew 21:12-22
Question for Meditation
► Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
“I want to be like Jesus,
So lowly and so meek;
For no one marked an angry word
That ever heard him speak.”
A.K. Miller, who wrote this lovely hymn in 1883, got this one wrong. Jesus often spoke angry words, especially against the hypocrisy of the Pharisees (e.g., Matthew 23:13-36). Here we see Jesus being very, very angry indeed! He did not merely speak angry words. He took decisive, violent action! It would seem that when people not only resist His words but stand in the way of others who want to worship God, they cross the red line with Him. What exactly was their sin in this instance (Matthew 21:12-13)? Can you think of other examples?
The chief priests and teachers of the law did not see anything wrong with all the businesses that had invaded the house of worship. Perhaps the reason they did not protest against the action Jesus took was because they realise that He actually did what they themselves should have done! What did they oppose instead (Matthew 21:14-15)?

Hymn: I want to be more like Jesus
1. Thro’ all the changing scenes of life,
I want to be more like Jesus!
In strength or weakness, peace or strife,
I want to be more like Jesus!
Refrain: More, more like Jesus, I would ever be;
More, more like Jesus,
I want to be more like Jesus.
2. As from His word I daily read,
I want to be more like Jesus!
For grace and patience is my need,
I want to be more like Jesus!
3. When crosses weigh my spirit down,
I want to be more like Jesus!
And when, by faith, I view my crown,
I want to be more like Jesus!
4. When by temptations tossed about,
I want to be more like Jesus!
When sinking in the sea of doubt,
I want to be more like Jesus!
5. While I can sing, my song shall be:
I want to be more like Jesus!
And thro’ a long eternity,
I want to be more like Jesus!
