TOPIC: A Fruitless Effort
OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.
SCRIPTURE FOR TODAY: Romans 10:1-13
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Q 2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
MESSAGE: Can we be made right with God without putting our trust in the redemptive work of Christ? The Jews tried to earn their salvation by their human effort but could not. They thought that they will be justified before God by keeping the Law. Their spiritual blindness motivated Paul to pray for them. What lesson can we learn from Paul concerning our unbelieving friends, relatives, colleagues and fellow citizens?
Some Christian groups have reduced salvation to some hard work of human effort, with prescriptions and regulations of ‘dos’ and ‘don’ts’. This is not biblical, and we should not subscribe to it or teach such. Struggling to be justified and accepted by God through our personal efforts is a part of our human nature of pride – we want to claim glory for achieving it. However, as Paul makes clear, all such human efforts are fruitless. God has destroyed the opportunity for boasting (Ephesians 2:8-9).
In any case, it is impossible to obey all the laws no matter how much we try. The Jews could not keep the law, neither can we! The process of salvation is not complicated (vs.10-12). All that God requires is that we put our faith into action by confessing with our mouths that Jesus is Lord.
