Topic: In The Beginning Was The Word
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.
Today’s Scripture: John 1:1-14
Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 1: What does the passage teach about God the Father, or God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
Message: As we start the New Year, it is very appropriate that our devotion today is at the beginning of creation. A fuller account is in Genesis 1 where we read, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. And God said, ‘Let there be ….and there was….’” In other words, we are reminded today that the Holy Trinity, in the form of God the Father, Son (as the Word) and the Holy Spirit, were all involved in creation.
In v.14, we read that, “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us”. That is what we have just celebrated during the Christmas season. It is the greatest miracle of all time. The most glorious part of it for us is that this Son of God has come to make us sons and daughters of God too. V.12 tells us what we need to do to attain this incredible status. Then we too shall have the same task as was committed to John the Baptist – the task of testifying to the Light of the world (vs.6-8).

Hymn: Praise to the Lord
1 Praise to the Lord,
The Almighty, the King of creation!
O my soul, praise him,
For he is your health and salvation!
Come, all who hear;
Now to his temple draw near,
join me in glad adoration.
2 Praise to the Lord,
Above all things so wondrously reigning;
Sheltering you under his wings,
And so gently sustaining!
Have you not seen all that is needful has been
sent by his gracious ordaining?
3 Praise to the Lord,
Who will prosper your work and defend you;
surely his goodness
And mercy shall daily attend you.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
if with his love he befriends you.
4 Praise to the Lord!
O let all that is in me adore him!
All that has life and breath,
Come now with praises before him.
Let the Amen sound from his people again;
gladly forever adore him.
Closing Prayer
Pray that throughout this New Year, you will testify by your words and actions to the Good News of His saving grace.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Hebrews 10:23
