Our Daily Bread 14th August 2022 Devotional For Today, Sunday: Message Written By Ā Amy Boucher PyeĀ (Our Daily Bread Ministries) ||Ā ODBĀ  Daily Reading NowĀ

      TOPIC:Ā Grace for Trials

KEY VERSE:Ā [The Lord] will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.Ā Deuteronomy 31:8

      TODAY’S SCRIPTURE:Ā Deuteronomy 31:1–8

1 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 ā€œI am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has said to me, ā€˜You shall not cross the Jordan.’

3 The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said.

4 And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land.

5 The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you.

6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.ā€

7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, ā€œBe strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.

8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.ā€

      BIBLE IN A YEAR:Ā Psalms 89–90; Romans 14

14, AUGUST 2022 – ODB FOR TODAY’S INSIGHT: As the Israelites were preparing to enter the promised land, Moses wouldn’t be leading them (Deuteronomy 31:2–3). Why? At Meribah, when God told him to speak to a rock so that water would pour from it, Moses disobeyed by striking the rock instead (Numbers 20).

The result was the same, but the problem was Moses was so angry at the bickering people that he made it appear that he and Aaron were responsible for bringing water from the rock. As he struck the rock, he declared: ā€œListen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?ā€ (v. 10). Because Moses ā€œdid not trust in [God] enough to honor [Him] as holy in the sight of the Israelitesā€ (v. 12), he wasn’t allowed to enter the promised land.

      OUR DAILY BREAD || SUNDAY – AUGUST 14TH, 2022 – ODB DEVOTIONAL

      MESSAGE

Annie Johnson Flint was crippled by severe arthritis just a few years after high school. She never walked again and relied on others to help care for her needs. Because of her poetry and hymns, she received many visitors, including a deaconess who felt discouraged about her own ministry. When the visitor returned home, she wrote to Annie, wondering why God allowed such hard things in her life.

In response, Annie sent a poem: ā€œGod hath not promised skies always blue, / flower-strewnĀ pathwaysĀ all our lives through. . . .ā€ She knew from experience that suffering often occurred, but that God would never abandon those He loves. Instead, He promised to give ā€œgrace for the trials, help from above, / unfailing sympathy, undying love.ā€ You may recognize that poem as the hymn ā€œWhat God Hath Promised.ā€

Moses also suffered and faced strife, but He knew God’s presence was with him. When he passed his leadership of the Israelites to Joshua, he told the younger man to be strong and courageous, because ā€œthe Lord your God goes with youā€ (Deuteronomy 31:6). Moses, knowing that the people of Israel would face formidable enemies as they entered and took the promised land, said to Joshua, ā€œDo not be afraid; do not be discouragedā€ (v. 8).

Disciples of Christ will face hardship, but we have God’s Spirit to encourage us. He’ll never leave us.

ODB Reading | Our Daily Bread Devotional 14 August 2022 Sunday

REFLECT:Ā When you endure trials, how do you trust in God? How could you share your stories of His faithfulness with others?

PRAY:Ā Heavenly Father, when I’m feeling discouraged and distressed, please remind me through Your Spirit that You’ll never leave me.
