Topic: Moses I

MEMORISE: My help comes from the Lord , the Maker of heaven and earth. Psalm 121:2

READ: Exodus 2:1-12

1 Now a man of the house of Levi married a Levite woman,

2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months.

3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile.

4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the river bank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it.

6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

8 ”Yes, go,” she answered. And the girl went and got the baby’s mother.

9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him.

10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people.

12 Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Numbers 1-2; Mark 3:1-21

MESSAGE: If you read the first chapter of Exodus, you will understand a little about the circumstances surrounding the birth of Moses. Being a male child, his mother had to hide him for three months until she could no longer do so. As we see in our Bible reading for today, Moses grew up as a prince in the palace, yet, knew his roots. He knew that he was not an Egyptian even though he lived with them. My child, although you are in this world, you are not of the world (John 17:16). So, wherever you find yourself, behave like the child of God that you are. Don’t be enticed by the fashion, language and lifestyle of unbelievers, you are not like them; never forget your roots.

In our Bible reading today, Moses saw the sufferings of his people, so without careful planning, he thought he could deliver them: that’s why he killed the Egyptian in defence of his own. He thought he could help himself. You see, the maxim ‘heaven helps those who help themselves is not Biblical. Believe me honestly, you cannot help God, but He can help you. Also, trying to help yourself when He should help you will be futile. If for instance, you keep failing a particular subject or course after studying very hard, then you decide to help yourself by cheating you are doing wrong. Let God help you instead.

KEY POINT: Ask God to help you in anyway you need his help today.

HYMN 12: I’m Pressing On The Upward Way

  1. I’m pressing on the upward way,
    New heights I’m gaining everyday;
    Still praying as I onward bound
    “Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”

Chorus:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven’s table-land;
Where love, and joy, and light abound,
Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.

  1. My heart has no desire to stay
    Where doubts arise, and fears dismay;
    Though some may dwell where these abound,
    My constant aim is higher ground.
  2. Beyond the mist I fain would rise,
    To rest beneath unclouded skies,
    Above earth’s turmoil peace is found
    By those who dwell on higher ground.

4. I long to scale the utmost height,
Though rough the way, and hard the fight,
My song while climbing, shall resound
Lord, lead me on to higher ground.

  1. Lord, lead me up the mountain side
    I dare not climb without my Guide;
    And, heaven gained, I’ll gaze around,
    With grateful heart from higher ground.
