TOPIC: Lessons From The Character Of Jesus (II)

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Daniel 11-12; Jude

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Corinthians 8:1-9

MEMORY VERSE: “But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.” – Luke 6:35

MESSAGE: Character disorder is one of the major problems of man in this age. Yesterday, we enjoined you to build the character of Jesus Christ into your life. We posited that the character of Jesus is the standard by which you and I must measure ourselves as leaders or train ourselves to become successful leaders. Imbibing and imitating Christ’s character is a potent cure to character disorder. We also examined two of Christ’s character traits we need to imbibe and imitate. Today, we shall look at three more of those character traits:

Third, Jesus had and demonstrated the quality of absolute love. Jesus set an outstanding example of self-sacrificing love. Self-sacrifice involves unselfishly putting the needs and concerns of others ahead of our own. How did Jesus demonstrate such love? He himself explained: “No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul on behalf of his friends” (John 15:13). Jesus willingly gave His perfect life for us. It was the greatest expression of love ever made by any human. But Jesus showed self-sacrificing love in other ways as well. A truly touching example of Jesus’ self-sacrificing love is recorded at John 19:25-27.

Also, Jesus had and demonstrated the quality of absolute influence. Jesus is the most influential figure in the world. We should all imitate Him. He was influential because He was compassionate, approachable, prayerful, unselfish, forgiving, zealous, humble and patient. He was a leader in a class of His own. He put the need of His followers ahead of His. Great leaders have come and gone but none of them can be compared to Jesus in terms of influence.

Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne all founded empires. But they rested the creation of their genius upon force. Jesus Christ founded His empire upon love, and at this hour millions of men would die for Him.

Lastly, Jesus had and demonstrated the quality of good work ethic. Jesus bequeathed His best work ethic to all Christians. He did His work and divine assignment with unstinted devotion and total commitment. He was not lazy; He never complained nor murmured and delivered excellently on the job. God is a worker. God worked to create the world and He works to sustain it. He is also constantly at work fulfilling His purposes in history and in the life of every person (Philippians 2:13).

As our Lord Jesus declared “My Father has been working until now, and I have been working” (John 5:17). God called His work “good”, confirming that work has intrinsic worth. Work is no disgrace –the disgrace is idleness. “He who is slothful in his work is a brother to him who is a great destroyer” (Proverbs 18:9).

Beloved, I enjoin you to set time aside to study the Word of God and pray these character qualities that distinguished Jesus as a leader par excellence into your life. More so, I encourage you to study the Word of God on the nine fruit of the Holy Spirit, meditate on them and pray them to manifestation in your life and ministry. I trust that the Holy Spirit will help you to achieve all that and make you an exceptionally successful leader in His kingdom.
