1 Corinthians 14:1-13 (Modern English Version)
1 Follow after love and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. 2 For he who speaks in an unknown tongue does not speak to men, but to God. For no one understands him, although in the spirit, he speaks mysteries. 3 But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification and exhortation and comfort. 4 He who speaks in an unknown tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. 5 I desire that you all speak in tongues, but even more that you prophesy. For greater is he who prophesies than he who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may receive edification.
6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you by revelation or knowledge or prophesying or doctrine? 7 Even when things without life give sound, whether flute or harp, how will it be known what is played unless they give a distinction in the sounds? 8 If the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare himself for the battle? 9 So also you, unless with the tongue you speak words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you shall speak into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the speech, I shall be a barbarian to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a barbarian to me. 12 So, seeing that you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek that you may excel to the edifying of the church.
13 Let him who speaks in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
MFM Daily Devotional for 21st August 2025 MESSAGE
The baptism in the Holy Spirit prepares a child of God to receive one or more of the “gifts” of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:4-11).
Three of the nine gifts may be categorized as the vocal gifts. They are the gift of prophecy, diverse kinds of tongues and the interpretation of tongues.
These gifts of the Spirit operate through a believer to enable him or her to do God’s work, to help other people, to live in victory and to build up the body of Christ.
These gifts operate in different ways. The gift of prophecy is given to speak forth God’s Word. It is the prediction through the power of the Holy Ghost about the past, the present or the future of a thing. All true prophecy must agree with the word of God.
The gift of diverse kinds of tongues is a supernatural way of speaking to or for God in more than one language. It is the ability to speak different kinds of tongues, or the ability to speak with strange languages. It is different from praying in tongues, or praying in the Spirit. All who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit have the privilege and the ability to pray in tongues; however, not all have the “gift” of tongues.
Interpretation of tongues is the ability from God to explain – or interpret – the message spoken in tongues. It is usually a dual gift used in conjunction with diverse kinds of tongues. Sometimes the message in tongues and the interpretation in tongues may come through different people, as the Holy Spirit gives them understanding.
As a believer, if you are not sure God is speaking to you about a matter, wait and God will reveal His will to you: first, in your spirit, and then possibly by confirming it “in the mouth of two or three witnesses” with prophecy. However, get your direction from God, and not from human beings.
Psalm 27:11 says, “Lead me in a plain path, O Lord, because of my enemies.” As you do this today, He shall direct you and make all crooked paths straight in your life, in the name of Jesus.
PRAYER POINTS:
MORNING
1. Father Lord, give me utterances of Your word, in the mighty name of Jesus.
2. My prophecy of prosperity, manifest now, in the name of Jesus.
3. Lord Jesus, speak to my situation now, in the name of Jesus.
EVENING
4. Every power, with the demonic knowledge of my destiny, be impotent now, in the name of Jesus.
5. Any evil mouth chanting incantation against me, die, in the name of Jesus.
6. Powers masquerading to harm me, be exposed and be disgraced, in the name of Jesus.
7. I decree and declare good things into my life now, in the name of Jesus.
