6 So it was, when they came, that he looked at Eliab and said, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before Him!”
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have [a]refused him. For[b] the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
8 So Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.”
And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not [c]sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with [d]bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.
MFM Daily Devotional 31 January 2026 MESSAGE
God sent Samuel to anoint another king over Israel since Saul had messed up. This king was in the house of Jesse but nobody recognised him. In fact, when Samuel stated his mission, David’s father cid not think it important to call him. He rather presented the other sons. However, God was determined to choose David. Likewise, you yourself may be looked down on because nobody thinks you’re worth anything. I encourage you to note that man does not have the final verdict. God’s opinion is more important than that of any man, including your family members and closest relatives. So, hold on to what God has said in His word concerning you.
Samuel anointed David in the midst of his brethren and the Spirit of the Lord carne upon him from that day. The anointing of God upon David moved him to the palace for service.
Believers need to learn that the first purpose of the anointing is service, to God and humanity. David received a mark of of visibility. When the anointing of God rests upon a man or woman, he or she begins to excel extraordinarily.
David did not become the king of Israel immediately he was anointed. He still had battles to fight before mounting the throne. However, he came out victorious because the Lord was with him. He was eventually anointed two more times – as king over Judah (2 Samuel 2:4) and over all Israel (2 Samuel 5:3).
Beloved, every true believer in Christ carries an anointing of God (1 John 2:20,27). You may not be anointed as a king over a nation but remember, you’ve been made a king and a priest unto God (Revelation 1:6). Ask the Lord to help you walk in the fullness of that calling. A full realisation of your kingship status in Christ will prevent you from doing certain things because you know they do not befit royalty. May the Lord help you to walk worthy of the anointing on your head everyday, in Jesus’ name.
