MFM Daily Devotional 20 December 2019 By Dr. D.K Olukoya – Dealing With The Spirit Of Saul

TOPIC: Dealing With The Spirit Of Saul

BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: Micah 1-3; Revelation 11

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 1 Samuel 22:11-23

MEMORY VERSE: “The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.” – Proverbs 21:16

MESSAGE: Many people in the name of wanting to get even or pay back an offender have destroyed their destiny helpers. Evil has a way of boomeranging on the wicked as ashes go back to the person that blows or scatters it. The story of king Saul of Israel readily comes to mind here and presents us with some profound lessons.

Our Fire Scripture today is an account of how king Saul ordered and supervised the killing of all the priests in the land, beginning with Priest Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub. In fact, on the order of Saul, Doeg the Edomite slew fourscore and five priests as well as men, women, children and sucklings, oxen and asses and sheep in Nob, the city of priests. However, one of the sons of Ahimelech called Abiathar escaped and ran to David for protection.

It is obvious that Saul’s action was fuelled by rage, envy and an evil determination to kill David. What else would have moved him to kill the priests of the Lord? Why did he not stop to think of the consequences of his actions before he took them? Saul paid dearly for this dastardly act later in the future.

Saul’s life was full of many costly mistakes. He acted more on impulse than reason and seeking God for guidance. When he refused to wait for Samuel and transgressed the office of a priest by offering sacrifices, he incurred God’s wrath. Here also, he killed the priests of the Lord as if they were chickens and further earned himself the wrath and judgement of God. A combination of these wrong choices and errors made God to reject Saul eventually. Also, when Prophet Samuel died, Saul became helpless as he had not really built a strong relationship with God nor built a prayerful lifestyle.

One day, the host of the Philistines gathered against Saul to battle. When he saw them, he was afraid. In 1 Samuel 28:6, the Bible says that Saul inquired of the Lord but the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets. It is a terrible thing for God to abandon anyone. I pray that the Lord will never abandon, leave nor forsake you, in Jesus’ name.

Again, Saul took an impulsive and foolish decision. He told his servant to seek him a woman with familiar spirit, so that he may inquire from her. God had warned sternly that His children should not consult anyone with familiar spirit or necromancers or wizards.

The servant told Saul about the woman with familiar spirit who lived at Endor. To the amazement of the medium, God intervened and made Samuel to appear and speak to Saul the same judgement He had passed to him from God when he (Samuel) was alive: he had earned God’s rejection for failing to execute God’s wrath on the Amalekites. Samuel added that by the next day Saul and his children would die because God would give them to the Philistines.

Beloved, if Saul had not made David his enemy and sought to kill him, he would have had an anointed helper to assist him in confronting and defeating the Philistine. Similarly, if he had not killed all the priests of the Lord in Nob, they would have been there to inquire for him from the Lord. Learn from Saul, lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge the Lord and seek His guidance before you act. He will direct your path and your life will be a huge success, in Jesus’ name.
