TOPIC: YOUR NAME AND YOUR DESTINY

Memory Verse: Gen 17:5: “Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee”.

Reading: Gen. 32:24-32.

The name by which you are called is a daily confession of who you are. Many people, including Christian, are answering names that do not reflect who they are. As a believer, your name should reflect how God sees you. God gives names according to how He sees us in order to reflect the purpose for which He sent us to this world. If your name does not reflect the purpose of God for your life, you should go into prayer of rededication. Your name should not glorify an idol god. Rededicate your name so that it can glorify God. God changed Abram’s name to reflect his purpose on earth.

The nurse that delivered Rebekah of her twin children saw Jacob as a supplanter but God saw him in a different light. For more than one hundred years, the world called him Jacob. Jacob was not satisfied with this name. He was rich but not a happy man. Then he wrestled with God in violent prayers for a change. God deliberately subjected him to a night of spiritual struggle in order to see how determined and resolute he was. When God could not prevail on him, He called a truce. In the end, God blessed him and changed his name to Israel (Gen. 32:24-32). From that day till now, no one has been able to prevail against Israel.

If your name does not truly reflect the glory of God in your life, you need to rededicate it by bringing it before God. When God sees determination in you, He will cause a change in your ministry so that your name can reflect the divine purpose. Elisha was a successful farmer in a remote village. He was not happy because his godly name did not reflect the work he was doing. The day he encountered Elijah, he made a sacrifice to rededicate his name to the service of his divine calling (1 Kgs. 19:19-21). When your name aligns with the work you are doing for God, your ministry will explode and you will know joy and sing a new song.
