DAILY BIBLE VERSE
Pure and undefiled religion before our God and Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. — Jas 1:27
Life’s experiences reveal who we truly are. They don’t create qualities within us, but they do bring out and develop what is already there. This chapter of James is filled with the various forms of life’s discipline. “Manifold trials” (James 1:2) likely refer to the persecutions and losses experienced by early Christians. “Temptations” (James 1:12) speak to the external and internal solicitations toward evil. Then there’s the heat of the fire of prosperity (James 1:11) and the “good gifts” the Father of lights has placed along our paths—family, friends, love, and more.
But the greatest training-ground for us is the Word of God (James 1:21-25). It’s compared to a mirror that shows us our true selves. Sadly, we often walk away and forget what we’ve seen. We humans have a remarkable way of dismissing anything that challenges our pride or our sense of respectability. But if we avoid this mistake, and instead become doers of the Word, not just hearers, we will grow into strong, brave, and beautiful souls, and find blessing in our actions.
Don’t focus solely on the imperfections the Word of God reveals, but instead believe that Jesus Christ is the perfect answer to your needs. He is strong where you are weak and full where you are empty.
“Keep yourself unspotted from the world.” We admire the innocence and purity of a sweet child, but there is something even more admirable—the face of a man or woman who has fought and suffered in the battle against the world’s corruption. To remain unspotted from the world’s evil, even while surrounded by it, is greater than living in isolation where no blight can touch. This daily struggle builds character.
To visit those in affliction is another aspect of Christian service. We are constantly surrounded by pain and sorrow, and it is through helping others in their suffering that we grow in Christlikeness.

Make our lives deeper, stronger, richer, more like Christ’s, filled with the spirit of heaven, and more dedicated to Your service and glory. Amen.
