Joni And Friends Devotional 21 November 2023 Message

Joni and Friends Devotional 21 November 2023 Tuesday Message. As you study today’s devotional, remember this; “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (NLT)

TOPIC: Hunger and Plenty

“Do not say, ‘Why were the old days better than these?’ For it is not wise to ask such questions. Wisdom, like an inheritance, is a good thing and benefits those who see the sun.” – Ecclesiastes 7:10-11 (NIV)

When Paul picked up his pen to write to the church in Philippi, he provided us with these timeless words, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:11-13, ESV)

Paul wrote this from a lonely prison cell, far from home, and kept apart from his family and friends. He likely relied on the charity of others for every meal. How could the Apostle Paul be content—even joyful—in every circumstance?

Contentment is realizing that God has already given us everything we need for our present happiness. The wise do not grieve for the things they do not have but rejoice over what they do have. It does no good to compare our lot in life with that of our neighbors or of what “once was.” We are called to give thanks for what God has given because it comes directly from his hand, and is perfectly designed with our growth and sanctification in mind.

Lord, I thank you for every little gift you’ve given me. Please forgive me for the times I’ve lingered in self-pity or envied others. Whether I experience feasting or hunger, abundance or need this week, strengthen me so that I will rejoice and be content in every circumstance you place me in.
