Joni and Friends 6 December 2021 Daily Devotional Message

Hold God to his Word. Does that sound a bit cheeky? Well, to the timid person who prays, yes. But how does the prayer warrior feel about holding God to his Word? My, that’s everyday praying.

God enjoys it when we bring his Word before him. He delights to do his will, and that we should expect him to do it, only delights him more. Charles Spurgeon put it this way: “You and I may take hold at any time upon the justice, and the mercy, and the faithfulness… of God, and we shall find every attribute of the Most High to be, as it were, a great battering ram with which we may open the gates of heaven.”

This quote inspired me when I was first paralyzed. At that time, I desperately wanted to rise above my depression and get my spiritual act together. When a friend showed me Philippians 1:6, I decided to use the verse as a lever. I would do what it said: Be confident. So in prayer, I held God to his Word and believed that, despite a tragic accident, he would complete his good work in me. And you know what? God is doing it.

Presumptuously holding God to his Word is arrogance. Humbly holding God to his Word is meekness. We can confidently expect God to do what he says he will do in Scripture, but our confidence must be tempered with a lowly and humble spirit. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth… blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Today, let me look to your promises with expectancy and assurance. For your Word never returns to you empty but always accomplishes what you desire. I glorify you for that.
