Isaiah 9:6 – For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

During this Christmas season, we celebrate the Child that was born, and we rejoice that God’s Son was given to us. The word “given” speaks of the preexistence of Jesus. He existed long before He was born here on earth.

Jesus was there – with the Father and the Holy Spirit – when this universe was only a brilliant idea. He was there at the dawn of creation when God spoke light into being, set the boundaries of the oceans, and flung the starry host against a velvet sky. Jesus was there when the serpent tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Jesus was there when Abraham climbed Mount Moriah with Isaac, the son of covenant. He was there when Moses stretched the rod over the Red Sea. He was in the fiery furnace with the three Hebrew children who did not bow, bend, or burn.

He is Jehovah Shammah – the Lord Who is there. He is there to catch our tears when our hearts are broken. He walks beside us to the grave of a loved one. His hand is on our shoulder when the doctor pronounces a dire diagnosis. He will never leave. To us, God gave His Son now and forever.
