DCLM Daily Manna – 23 November 2025 Devotional | MESSAGE
Pride has built-in hazards as illustrated by Leslie B Flynn in the fable of the two ducks and the frog. These best of friends had to leave their home pond when it began to dry up. The ducks knew they could easily fly to another location. To transport their friend, the frog, they decided to fly with a stick between their two bills, with the frog hanging on the stick with its mouth. A farmer, looking up from his field at the flying trio, remarked, ‘Well, isn’t that a clever idea? I wonder who thought of that idea.’ The frog said, ‘I did.’ The frog fell the moment it opened its mouth to claim Credit and learned the hard way that pride goes before a fall.
Pride has been the major cause of the fall of humans and angels. The Archangel, Lucifer, became the devil, the arch-enemy of God and man through pride. Down the ages, proud and arrogant people have not been spared God’s judgment. Pride, like other sins, emanates from the depraved nature of man. Wealth, achievements, attainments, discoveries, inventions, natural endowments, and uncommon privileges make people proud and forget they are the products of God’s mercy. The unregenerate man is, by nature, depraved. His motives and intentions are corrupt. His depraved nature controls his imagination, desires, ambitions, words, and actions. Therefore, he must be born again to possess the nature of God, free from sin.
In today’s passage, Edom was condemned for pride. She was self-exalting and self-confident because of her secured habitation and the strength of her position. She felt impenetrable and impregnable from enemies. She was powerful and, therefore, plundered, robbed, and killed others. She flourished in trade and was callous toward Israel, her neighbour and relative. Despite Edom’s perceived sense of security, the Prophet affirmed that she would be brought low and humbled; lose support from friends, while her defense would eventually fail.
While God humbles the proud, He upholds and promotes the lowly. The Lord Jesus Christ, our perfect Example and role model, teaches that all His followers should learn meekness and lowliness from Him. He became humble and chose death on the cross to save mankind from sin. For this reason, He was highly exalted by God, and given a name above all names in history.
Today, the only cure for pride is genuine conversion and transformation of life through repentance from sin and faith in Jesus Christ.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: When grace is admitted, pride goes away; when pride is admitted, grace goes away.
