MEMORY VERSE
“But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience” (Titus 2:1,2)
BIBLE READING: Titus 2:1-6
DCLM Daily Manna 2 May 2026 Devotional | MESSAGE
King Solomon of Israel learned the hard way about the pitfalls of misbehaviour in his later years. Once enjoying a close relationship with God in his youth, he sadly strayed from the path of righteousness as he aged. Later, he moaned in regrets that, “The hoary head is a crown of glory (only), if it be found in the way of righteousness.”
Today’s passage serves as a spiritual guide for the young and the old, showing us how to walk in righteousness. It emphasises the rich diversity within the Church and offers specific guidance for our actions and attitudes. By providing these instructions to Titus, Apostle Paul reminds us that no matter our age or life stage, we all have a role in living out and teaching sound doctrine. As the esteemed Christian author A.W. Tozer said, “A Christian is never off duty.” Whether young or old, male or female, we are called to reflect Christ and guide others in their faith journey.
Reflecting on this passage, it is clear that the guidance given to older men and women is not only for their own benefit; it is also meant to uplift the younger generation. They are to live in a way that sets an example for the younger men and women, teaching them through words and actions. They should embody what it means to lead a godly life, to love and serve others, and to practise self-control and purity. In turn, the younger men and women are encouraged to heed this wisdom and learn from their elders.
This stance is especially crucial in a world that often celebrates indulgence. Senior citizens are counselled to earn respect not by demanding it because of age but by living in a way that naturally commands it. Older women, too, are expected to live reverently, avoiding slander, addiction to wine, and steering clear of gossip and division. Instead, they should use their words to uplift, encourage, and teach what is good. He who follows this road map can never lose his way.
