TOPIC: Simply Our Best
KEY VERSE
“No meat offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven: for ye shall burn no leaven, nor any honey, in any offering of the LORD made by fire” (Leviticus 2:11).
BIBLE READING: Leviticus 2:1-11
1 And when any will offer a meat offering unto the Lord, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon:
2 And he shall bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests: and he shall take thereout his handful of the flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall burn the memorial of it upon the altar, to be an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord:
3 And the remnant of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’: it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the Lord made by fire.
4 And if thou bring an oblation of a meat offering baken in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers anointed with oil.
5 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in a pan, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil.
6 Thou shalt part it in pieces, and pour oil thereon: it is a meat offering.
7 And if thy oblation be a meat offering baken in the fryingpan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.
8 And thou shalt bring the meat offering that is made of these things unto the Lord: and when it is presented unto the priest, he shall bring it unto the altar.
9 And the priest shall take from the meat offering a memorial thereof, and shall burn it upon the altar: it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord.
10 And that which is left of the meat offering shall be Aaron’s and his sons’: it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the Lord made by fire.

An anonymous Christian author once wrote; “A life of sacrifice and purity is the most fragrant aroma that can rise to God.” This thought captures the heart of today’s text.
In the passage, God guided the Israelites on the meat or grain offerings. This sacrifice beautifully illustrates how our devotion and gifts can create pleasing aroma for God. The offering was made up of flour, oil, and frankincense. They symbolise the very best we have, reminding us to give our all to God rather than just the scraps. This in a way acknowledges God as the Source of our supplies and expresses our indebted gratitude to Him for the supplies.
This principle is just as relevant today. Even though we are no longer mandated to bring flour, oil, or incense to God, we are still expected to make sacrificial devotion as we completely offer our best to Him. For New Testament believers, it is simply never enough to worship and offer unto God routinely. The sacrifice of Christ on the cross at Calvary demands the whole of our time, talent, treasure, temple, nay our totality. To offer anything less is an act of ingratitude and lack of God’s supreme and sovereign love that elicited our glorious salvation.
When we come to worship God, therefore, we should always strive to give our best with sincere hearts and intentions. We must avoid mixing our worship with hypocrisy, selfish desires, pride, or other forms of sin. So, take a moment today to reflect on your motivations and your heart as you worship God. Avoid the leaven of sin or anything that can hinder your relationship with the Lord and thus limit the gracious outflow of His manifold blessings to us.

God still abhors flippant and polluted sacrifice.
