DCLM Daily Manna 17 June 2026 Devotional – MESSAGE
Bible scholars reveal that there are over 3,300 questions covering various topics and aspects of human endeavour in the Scripture. Some questions are open-ended, reflective, and probing (which was used by the Lord in our text today). Questioning techniques are invaluable tools for finding out or revealing some truths. They help uncover hidden truths, understand the thoughts of the heart, and determine a learner ’s level of understanding and acquired knowledge. When misgivings, misunderstandings, or stereotyped ideas about a subject arise, questions are beneficial. Questions have been powerful tools for aiding discoveries and establishing profound truths.
In today’s passage, we have a practical instance. Christ knew there were varied perceptions about His person and would not leave His disciples in confusion. He, therefore, asked them this all-important question in our text, so they could see the truth on which the Church is built. The religious oligarchy queried the messiahship of Christ. After all, they knew His parents, siblings, and family’s business. No wonder they presumed that He was not genuine, but working against the Old Testament traditions, and they were determined to eliminate Him. They wrongly assumed that He worked miracles through the prince of devils, Beelzebub, and not the power of God, denying His miraculous power. The Lord Jesus used the questioning technique to clear doubts and wrong notions about Himself. He was not John the Baptist, Elias or one of the prophets, but Christ the Messiah, as confessed by Simon Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit.
What men know about Christ determines what they receive from God. Christ is the truth personified. Ignorance about His person implies spiritual blindness, darkness, condemnation and death. In contemporary times, people still doubt the validity of scriptural truth about Christ’s identity and deity. They turn a deaf ear to the teaching of Christ as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world, and therefore is Lord of all. They erroneously hold to religion, which lacks the power to save from sin and deliver from the activities of the powers of darkness. They abandon the truth but believe in lies and fables, eventually leading to their perdition.
The Lord has not changed; and even today, He still questions all: “What do people say about me? What do you say about me?” The answer is obvious, if you are saved and your sins cleansed. It remains for such believers who have experienced His saving grace, to share their experience with others who have not tasted the benefits of the sacrifice of Christ, so they too can be saved, and granted an eternal abode in His kingdom.
