Indeed! Personal Accounts of the Resurrection Story: Mary
APRIL 1, 2023
Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. – Mark 16:9
Recommended Reading: John 20:1-18
Very little mention is made in the four Gospels of a group of women “who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities” and who supported Jesus (Luke 8:1-3). One of these women was called Mary Magdalene—Mary who was from the town of Magdala on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.
This Mary is mentioned only by Luke until the morning of Jesus’ resurrection when all four Gospel accounts cite her as being among the first (Luke 24:1-10), if not the first (Mark 16:9), to see the resurrected Christ. Luke, the physician, notes that the women came to the tomb to complete Jesus’ burial with the spices traditionally used (Luke 24:1)—only to find the tomb empty. It was to Mary that Jesus revealed Himself in the garden, telling her to return to the disciples and announce His return to life.
For what Jesus had done for Mary to restore her life, she repaid His love and mercy with faithfulness. Let Mary’s faithfulness and devotion be an example to you today (1 Corinthians 4:2).
Faithfulness knows no difference between small and great duties.
