Trials have a way of catching us off guard. When difficulties arise, our first reaction is often confusion—Why is this happening? What did I do wrong? We tend to see hardship as something unusual, something that shouldn’t be part of our journey.
But this passage reminds us of a different perspective. It tells us not to be surprised by trials, but to understand that they are part of the life of faith. Not because God has abandoned us, but because He is shaping us.
Even more challenging is the instruction that follows: be very glad.
At first glance, that feels almost impossible. How can we rejoice in pain, in pressure, in uncertainty? Yet, the joy spoken of here is not based on the trial itself—it is rooted in what the trial produces and what it connects us to.
Through our trials, we share in Christ’s suffering. We are drawn closer to Him in ways comfort cannot achieve. We begin to understand His strength, His endurance, and His presence more deeply. And with that connection comes a promise—future glory and joy that far outweighs present struggles.
Trials refine us. They strengthen our faith. They teach us to rely on God, not just when things are easy, but especially when they are hard.
And in those moments, something powerful happens: joy begins to rise, not because everything is perfect, but because we know God is at work.
So if you are walking through a difficult season right now, don’t lose heart. What you are facing is not meaningless. God is using it. He is shaping you, strengthening you, and preparing you for something greater.
And one day, the joy that is ahead will make every trial worth it.
Let’s Pray
Lord God, I come before You in the midst of my challenges and trials. Sometimes I don’t understand what I am going through, and it can feel overwhelming. But today, I choose to trust You.
Help me not to be discouraged or surprised by the difficulties I face. Instead, give me the strength to endure and the faith to see beyond my current situation.
Teach me how to rejoice, even in trials. Let Your presence be my comfort and Your promises be my hope. Draw me closer to You through every challenge, and shape my heart to reflect Your strength and character.
Thank You for the assurance that my suffering is not in vain and that greater joy is ahead. I trust You with every part of my journey.
