Life is a relentless current, constantly pulling our attention downstream toward the shallows of temporal demands. The undertow of responsibilities, the riptide of worries, the siren call of ambitions, and the crushing weight of daily pressures can easily submerge our thoughts, drowning out the still, small voice of eternity. Before we are even aware of the drift, our spiritual gaze, once lifted to the horizon of God’s purpose, becomes fixed on the pebbles at our feet—the earthly concerns that, while not unimportant, were never meant to be our final destination.
But the voice of Scripture calls us to the surface, to breathe the air of a higher perspective. Colossians 3:1-2 is not merely a suggestion; it is the logical, glorious consequence of our salvation. If we have been raised with Christ—if we have truly died with Him and been resurrected to newness of life—then our center of gravity has fundamentally shifted. Our lives are no longer to be orbited around the temporary, the fading, the temporal. We are invited, compelled, and empowered to seek the things above—the eternal realities of God’s kingdom, the inexhaustible riches of His presence, and the perfect, unfolding tapestry of His will for our lives.
This divine orientation does not render us absent from the world, but it transforms our presence in it. It means we no longer approach our daily responsibilities as slaves to the mundane, but as ambassadors of the eternal. Our mindset undergoes a profound metamorphosis. Our priorities, once a jumbled heap of personal ambition, are reordered and aligned with God’s ultimate purpose. We begin to cultivate a heart that beats in sync with His, valuing what He values: the unshakeable truth of His Word, the sacrificial currency of love, the pure garment of righteousness, and the intimate, abiding relationship He created us to enjoy.
Seeking the things above is the daily, deliberate work of the soul. It is the conscious, Spirit-empowered choice to feast on God’s Word instead of grazing on empty distractions. It is the intentional turn toward prayer when the natural reflex would be to spiral into worry. It is the steadfast investment in eternal impact—the kind word, the act of service, the shared gospel—rather than chasing the fleeting satisfaction of worldly success.
When our hearts are securely anchored in the realm above, we experience a peace that transcends all understanding—a peace that is not the absence of conflict, but the presence of Christ. We are less violently shaken by the tremors of earthly circumstance because our foundation is not built on the shifting sands of what changes, but on the unshakeable Rock of who is unchanging: Christ Himself, the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Our King is seated at the right hand of the Father, a position of ultimate authority, finished victory, and complete sufficiency. He is not anxious, frantic, or overwhelmed. And as we fix the eyes of our hearts on Him—the Author and Perfecter of our faith—we are reminded that our lives are not a precarious experiment, but are securely hidden with Him in God.
So, today, resist the downward pull. Deliberately lift your gaze from the waves to the One who walks on them. Set your heart on things above. Let your thoughts, your deepest desires, and your daily actions become a living echo of the new life you have in Christ.

Oh Lord God, the Eternal King, the Unshakeable Foundation of all that is true and good, I come before You with a heart full of awe and gratitude. From the depths of my being, I thank You—not just for a concept, but for the living reality that You have raised me to new life in Your Son, Jesus Christ. I was dead in my earthly striving, and You made me alive in Him.
And now, Abba Father, I echo the prayer of Your ancient psalmist: “Lift up my soul to You.” Help me, by the power of Your indwelling Spirit, to seek the things that are above. Do not let me be consumed, defined, or dragged down by the glittering distractions and heavy burdens of this world. Break the hypnotic spell that the temporal so often casts over my heart.
Align my rebellious and wandering heart with Your perfect will. Teach me, moment by moment, to discern and cherish what is eternal. Give me X-ray vision that sees past the surface of circumstances to the spiritual realities at work. I fix my eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith. When I feel the rising tide of earthly concerns—when anxiety pounds against the shores of my soul, when frustration clouds my vision, when the pursuit of more threatens to crowd out the pursuit of You—send Your Spirit as a gentle but persistent wind, reminding me to lift my focus, to recalibrate my gaze, and to return my wandering heart back to You.
I surrender my thoughts, my decisions, and my deepest desires to You. Let them no longer reflect the fading values of a fallen world, but let them shine with the radiant purpose of Your eternal kingdom. Transform my daily work into an act of worship, my conversations into channels of grace, and my ambitions into a desire to see Your name made great.
Thank You, Lord, for the profound peace that is not of this world. Thank You for the unshakeable assurance that comes not from getting everything right, but from setting my heart on the One who is always right. My life is secure, not because I am holding tightly to You, but because You are holding tightly to me.
And so, with the church throughout all ages, I fix my eyes on Jesus, seated at the right hand of God. It is in His matchless and all-authoritative name that I pray,
