TOPIC: Jesus—Our Better Covenant
📖 Bible Verse for Today
Hebrews 8:1, 6 (NIV)
“Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven… But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.”
Daily Devotional Message
Today’s daily devotional reminds us of the incredible privilege believers have through Jesus Christ. Hebrews 8:1 and 6 reveal that Jesus is not only our High Priest, but also the mediator of a better covenant built on better promises.
This is a message of hope, assurance, and grace.
The writer of Hebrews points us to a central truth: “We do have such a high priest…” Jesus is alive, reigning, and seated at the right hand of God. His work of salvation is complete, and He continually represents believers before the Father.
In the Old Testament, priests served temporarily and repeatedly offered sacrifices for sin. But Jesus became the perfect and eternal High Priest. His sacrifice on the cross was once and for all.
Nothing more needs to be added.
Because of Him, believers now have direct access to God.
This changes everything.
You do not have to live trying to earn God’s acceptance through endless striving. Through Christ, grace has already made a way. Jesus fulfilled what the old system could never fully accomplish.
The verse also says that Jesus is the mediator of a “better covenant.”
A covenant is an agreement or promise relationship. Under the old covenant, people struggled under laws they could never perfectly keep. But the new covenant through Christ is built on God’s grace, mercy, and transformation from within.
This covenant is based on better promises.
Promises of forgiveness.
Promises of salvation.
Promises of God’s presence.
Promises of eternal life.
Promises of a transformed heart.
What makes these promises so powerful is that they are secured by Jesus Himself.
Human promises can fail.
People may disappoint us.
Circumstances may change.
But God’s promises remain firm.
Jesus guarantees them.
Another beautiful truth in this passage is that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God. In biblical imagery, sitting down signifies completed work. Jesus finished the work necessary for salvation through His death and resurrection.
This means believers can live with confidence and peace.
You do not have to constantly wonder if God accepts you when your faith is in Christ.
You do not have to carry the weight of trying to save yourself.
Jesus has already done what was necessary.
Your role is to trust Him, follow Him, and live in the freedom of His grace.
Sometimes believers still live as though they are under constant condemnation, striving endlessly to prove themselves worthy. But the gospel reminds us that our standing before God is based on Christ’s finished work, not our own perfection.
This does not make us careless—it inspires gratitude and deeper devotion.
When you truly understand God’s grace, you desire to walk closer with Him.
You worship with gratitude.
You obey out of love.
You live with confidence instead of fear.
Today, reflect on the better promises you have in Christ.
No matter what challenges you face, your hope is secure.
Jesus is your High Priest.
Your Savior.
Your mediator.
And His promises will never fail.
Rest in that truth today.
Let it bring peace to your heart and strength to your faith.
Because through Jesus, you are living under a better covenant filled with better promises.
Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for sending Jesus Christ as my High Priest and Savior. Thank You for the better covenant established through His sacrifice and love.
Lord, help me to fully trust in the finished work of Christ and to rest in Your promises. Remove fear, doubt, and striving from my heart.
Teach me to live with gratitude and confidence, knowing that I have access to You through Jesus. Help me to grow in faith and walk closely with You each day.
Thank You for Your grace, mercy, and the eternal hope I have in Christ.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
