Daily Devotional Message
Absalom was everything the world calls impressive.
He was physically striking — the Bible says there was no one in Israel as highly praised for his looks (2 Samuel 14:25). He was politically gifted, spending four years standing at the city gate, greeting every person who came for justice, winning their hearts away from his own father with effortless charm. He had ambition, momentum, a following. When he finally made his move against David, half the nation went with him.
And somewhere in the middle of all of that, he built himself a pillar.
The reason he gives is quietly heartbreaking: “I have no son to carry on the memory of my name.” Beneath all the confidence and political maneuvering, Absalom was afraid of being forgotten. He wanted to be remembered — and since he could not trust anyone else to do it, he would do it himself. He would carve his name into stone and place it in the King’s Valley where everyone would see it. He would secure his own legacy with his own hands.
This verse arrives in the text immediately after his death — inserted by the writer as a deliberate parenthesis, a pause before the grief of the story continues. Read it in context and the irony is devastating. Absalom, who built a monument to ensure he would never be forgotten, was thrown into a pit in the forest and covered with a heap of stones (v.17) — a burial of disgrace, not honour. The man who tried hardest to make his name last is now most associated with rebellion, betrayal, and a shameful end.
The pillar still stands. The man is in a pit.
The contrast with his father David could not be sharper. David was a man who failed in spectacular ways — adultery, murder, failed parenting, broken relationships. But the thread running through David’s life was a constant return to God, a hunger for God’s heart over his own reputation. David did not build monuments to himself. He built a life oriented toward God. And it is David’s name — not Absalom’s — that runs through the lineage of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:1), remembered across three thousand years not as a monument but as a covenant.
Absalom’s fear — “I have no son to carry on my name” — points to something many people feel but rarely say out loud: the dread of insignificance, the anxiety of being forgotten, the need to leave something that proves you were here. It is a human fear and it is not shameful. But the answer to it is not a pillar. The answer is a life genuinely given to God, whose name is the only name that guarantees you will be known — not just in the King’s Valley but in eternity.
Proverbs 10:7 says the memory of the righteous is a blessing. Not a monument. Not a self-built structure. A blessing — something that lives in the people your life touched, in the works God prepared for you to walk in, in the fruit that remains long after you are gone.
Stop building pillars. Build a life. Let God carry the name.
Morning Prayer
Father, I read Absalom’s story this morning and I recognise something in it — the desire to be remembered, to matter, to leave something behind that proves I was here. That longing is not wrong. But the way Absalom tried to answer it was. And I do not want to spend my life building monuments to myself while missing the life You actually prepared for me.
Search me today. Show me where I am building pillars — where I am promoting my own name, securing my own legacy, working for my own recognition rather than Yours. It may not look as dramatic as Absalom’s monument. It may be subtle — the way I speak, the way I share, the things I reach for. Show me where my hands are building for the wrong name.
I want to be like David — not perfect, but oriented. A person who keeps coming back to You, who cares more about Your heart than their own reputation, whose legacy is not carved in stone but living in the people they served and the works they walked in faithfully.
Let my name be carried by You, not by me. Let my memory be a blessing, not a monument. In Jesus’ name — Amen.

- Absalom built his pillar out of the fear of being forgotten. How honest are you willing to be about that same fear in your own life — the anxiety of insignificance, the need to be remembered? How does that fear show up in the way you work, speak, or seek recognition?
- The pillar still stands but the man is in a pit. What is the difference between a legacy that outlasts you in form and one that outlasts you in meaning? What would a life genuinely given to God — rather than to your own name — look like in practical terms for you right now?
