“It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God — that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” — 1 Corinthians 1:30 (NIV)
Daily Devotional Message
The Corinthian church had a boasting problem.
People were dividing over human leaders, comparing teachers, measuring their worth by the wisdom and eloquence of the person who had brought them to faith. Some followed Paul, some Apollos, some Peter — as if the gospel were a philosophy school and salvation depended on which teacher you had chosen. The whole thing was drifting dangerously toward the kind of pride that puts human wisdom at the centre of what God is doing.
And then Paul writes this verse. And it cuts every boast at the root.
It is because of him that you are in Christ. Not because of your teacher. Not because of your intellect or your seeking or the quality of your response. Because of God. The initiative was His. The placement was His. Everything you have in Christ traces back to His doing, not yours. And what you have in Christ is not a set of resources He distributes from a distance — it is Christ Himself, who has become these things for you.
That word — become — is everything. Paul does not say Christ gives you wisdom, hands you righteousness, delivers holiness to your door. He says Christ has become these things. They are not separate gifts. They are inseparable from the Person. Which means when you have Christ, you have all four — already, completely, without earning any of them:
What Christ Has Become For You
This is what the ancient Hebrew name Jehovah Tsidkenu — the Lord Our Righteousness — was pointing toward from the beginning (Jeremiah 23:6). God would one day provide a righteousness that was not our own, that came entirely from outside us, from His own nature. In Christ that name finds its fullest meaning. He does not just make us righteous. He is our righteousness. We wear His standing before the Father the way a child wears their father’s name — not because they earned it but because they belong to him.
The practical question this verse puts to every believer is simple but searching: are you living as someone who already has wisdom, righteousness, holiness, and redemption — or are you still living as someone trying to accumulate what you think you lack? Because there is a version of the Christian life that is exhausting, self-condemning, and never quite arriving — and it comes from forgetting that Christ has already become everything the Father requires of you.
You are in Christ. And in Him, you are complete.
Morning Prayer
Father, I receive this verse this morning as a declaration about who I already am in Christ — not who I am trying to become. Thank You that Christ has not just given me things from a distance. He has become these things. And because I am in Him, I have all four: wisdom, righteousness, holiness, redemption. Not partially. Not conditionally. Completely.
Where I have been living as though I am still working toward a standing I already have — striving for an acceptance that was settled at the cross, trying to earn a holiness I was already given, making decisions in confusion when I already carry the wisdom of Christ — forgive me. And let the truth of this verse reset the way I move through this day.
Let me live from what I have, not toward what I think I lack. Let me speak and decide and act as someone who carries divine wisdom. Let me stand before You and before others as someone clothed in righteousness that is not my own. Let me walk in the freedom of a person who has already been redeemed — fully, finally, at a price I did not pay.
You are Jehovah Tsidkenu — the Lord my righteousness. I boast in nothing today except what You have done and who You have become for me. In Jesus’ name — Amen.

- 01Paul says Christ has become — not merely given — these four things. What is the difference between receiving gifts from Christ and being united to Christ who is the gift? How does that distinction change the way you think about what you already possess as a believer?

- “It is because of him that you are in Christ” — your placement in Christ is God’s doing, not primarily yours. How does knowing that the initiative was His — not yours — change the way you carry your faith today, especially in seasons when your own pursuit of God feels weak or inconsistent?
