“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing [through the experience of your faith] that by the power of the Holy Spirit you will abound in hope and overflow with confidence in His promises.” — Romans 15:13 (AMP)
Daily Devotional Message
Paul does not end this chapter with a command. He ends it with a blessing — a prayer breathed over every person who would read it. And the first three words of that prayer carry everything: the God of hope.
Not the God who provides hope when hope runs out. Not the God who restores hope after difficulty. The God of hope — meaning hope is not something He occasionally distributes. It is inseparable from who He is. He is the source, the substance, and the sustainer of it. When your hope runs low, you are not running out of a feeling. You are running low on your connection to a Person — and this verse is the invitation back.
Notice what Paul asks God to give first, before he even mentions hope: joy and peace. This is not accidental. Joy and peace are the soil in which hope grows. You cannot overflow with hope while your interior world is anxious and joyless — not because joy and peace are prerequisites you must manufacture, but because they are gifts the same God pours in. He fills you with joy and peace so that hope can overflow. He prepares the ground before He produces the harvest.
What the God of Hope Promises in This Verse
Now look at what the Amplified adds in those brackets: “through the experience of your faith.” Joy and peace come to you as you believe — not before, not after, but in the active, ongoing act of trusting. Faith is the channel. The more you believe — genuinely, daily, with the whole weight of your life leaning on God — the more joy and peace flow through that channel into you.
And the source of all of it is not willpower or positive thinking. Paul names it plainly: by the power of the Holy Spirit. Hope is not a discipline you maintain. It is a gift the Spirit produces in you. The same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead — the same power that overturned the grave — is the power working in you to produce hope that does not simply endure difficult seasons but overflows in them.
This verse was written as a blessing — Paul praying over the Roman believers. But take it this morning as a declaration spoken over you personally. May the God of hope fill you. Not trickle. Not top up. Fill — completely, generously, all the way to overflowing. Joy first. Then peace. Then hope in superabundance, confident in every promise He has ever made.
Open up. Let Him fill you. Then let it overflow.
Morning Prayer
God of hope — that is who You are, not just what You do. And I come to You this morning as the source of everything I need: joy where I have been heavy, peace where I have been anxious, and hope — not barely enough hope, but overflowing, superabundant, Spirit-powered hope that cannot be shaken by what I see around me.
Fill me today. Fill me with all joy — the kind that does not depend on my circumstances being right. Fill me with all peace — the settled, deep, unexplainable quiet that comes only from knowing You hold my life. Let that joy and peace prepare the ground in me so that hope can grow and overflow.
Holy Spirit, I open myself to Your power right now. I cannot produce this on my own — I have tried. I need You to do what only You can do: take this person who has been running on low, and fill them until hope runs over. Until it reaches my family. Until it reaches the people I will meet today. Until what You have poured into me cannot help but spill out onto those around me who desperately need it.
I believe Your promises today — not because my feelings say they are true, but because You are the God who cannot lie. Your word is enough. Your promise is enough. And in the act of believing that, I receive everything this verse declares.
Fill me, God of hope. Overflow me. In Jesus’ name — Amen.
Reflection for Today
- Paul calls God “the God of hope” — not “a God who gives hope” but the God whose very nature is hope. How does knowing that hope has a Person behind it — not just a feeling — change the way you approach seasons when hope feels thin or completely absent?
- The Amplified adds “through the experience of your faith” — joy and peace come as you actively believe, not before. Where in your life are you waiting to feel peace before you choose to trust, when the verse says peace comes in the trusting? What would it look like to trust first today?
- “Abound in hope” means superabundance — overflowing, more than enough. If you were truly overflowing with hope today, who in your life would be the first person reached by what spills over from you? How can you be intentional about letting that happen?
