Topic: Don’t Be Led Astray

Scripture: Luke 21: 8-9

It seems as though every few years, there is a new report of when the world will end. In the beginning, the apostles and their disciples thought that it wouldn’t be long before Jesus returned. They went about preaching that he would return soon, so they had better hurry up and reform their lives.

When they figured out that they were dying and Jesus hadn’t returned, the Gospels were written so that there would be an account of Jesus and his teachings for those who would come later. In fact, Luke says just this in the prologue to his Gospel. Then, it was the first millennium when they thought how can it be much longer.

In my own lifetime, I know of at least three instances where people were convinced the world was ending. And there have also been a succession of false prophets trying to lead Christians astray. In some of these instances, people have sold their property, quit their jobs and gone to a selected place supposed to be where they will be assumed into heaven only to have to go back down that mountain and try to regain their property and their jobs.

Jesus told us that no one knows the day or the hour except the Father, so there is no reason to believe any theory or proposed date for the world to end. The more important thing to do is to live each day prepared to meet our God, so that no matter when we are called, we will be ready.

Loving God, may we always be free from fear and live according to your Word so that we will be ready to meet you regardless of the day or the hour. Amen.
