Daily Devotional for Couples – July 22, 2026
No marriage survives without forgiveness. Two imperfect people living closely together will inevitably disappoint each other. The strength of a marriage is not measured by the absence of mistakes, but by the willingness to forgive and begin again.
Topic: The Power of Choosing Forgiveness
Anchor Scripture
“Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.” — Colossians 3:13 (NKJV)
Today’s Message
Every couple has moments when words are spoken carelessly, expectations are unmet, or misunderstandings leave emotional scars. If these hurts are ignored, they slowly harden into resentment, and resentment quietly steals the joy that once filled the relationship.
God never intended marriage to be a record of offenses. Instead, He calls husbands and wives to extend the same grace they have received from Him. Christ forgave us when we were undeserving, and He invites us to reflect that mercy in our homes.
Forgiveness does not mean pretending the hurt never happened or approving wrong behavior. It means choosing not to allow bitterness to control your heart. It is releasing the desire for revenge and trusting God to bring healing where pain once existed.
Sometimes pride keeps couples from taking the first step. We wait for the other person to apologize before softening our hearts. But love is willing to move first. A sincere “I’m sorry,” a humble “Will you forgive me?” or a gracious “I forgive you” can restore what anger threatened to destroy.
Forgiveness also creates a safe environment where honesty can flourish. When spouses know they will be met with grace instead of condemnation, trust grows deeper. This does not eliminate accountability, but it allows correction to happen in an atmosphere of love rather than fear.
Remember that forgiveness is often a daily decision, not a one-time event. As Christ continually pours out His mercy upon us, we are empowered to extend that same mercy to one another.
A marriage marked by forgiveness becomes a living testimony of God’s redeeming love.
Action Prompt for Today
Ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart. Is there any hurt, disappointment, or unresolved conflict you have been holding against your spouse? Take the initiative today. Have an honest conversation, ask for forgiveness where needed, freely extend forgiveness, and end your conversation by praying together for renewed peace and unity.
Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the incredible gift of Your forgiveness through Jesus Christ. As You have shown us mercy, help us to show mercy to one another in our marriage.
Remove every root of bitterness, pride, anger, and unforgiveness from our hearts. Give us the humility to admit when we are wrong and the grace to forgive when we have been hurt. Heal every wound caused by careless words, broken expectations, or past disappointments.
Teach us to love with patience, extend compassion generously, and choose reconciliation over resentment. Let Your peace guard our hearts and restore joy wherever conflict has stolen it.
Strengthen our marriage each day so that it reflects the unconditional love, mercy, and faithfulness of Christ. May our home be filled with grace, understanding, and lasting unity.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
