TOPIC: Shining Lights
DAILY BIBLE VERSE FOR TODAY
So that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world as you hold forth the word of life, in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain. — Phil 2:15-16
The wise man says the spirit of a person is the candle of the Lord (Pro 20:27). By nature, we are like unlit lamps and candles. Just as the wick is made for the flame but remains dark and cold until it is lit, we too are unable to shine until our souls are ignited by the eternal light of God, who “is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” Has the candle of your life been lit by the touch of Christ, the Sun of Righteousness?
Our Lord says: “Let your light shine before others.” He shows how absurd it is to light a lamp and then hide it under a basket. If the light is covered, its purpose is defeated. Sadly, many of us cover the light of our testimony for God with the basket of unkind words, ill temper, or a discontented and complaining spirit. These attitudes, along with more obvious failings, keep us from shining brightly in a dark world. It’s not our job to ignite the flame or supply the oil. Our responsibility is to keep our lamps clean and bright and to avoid anything that might block the light of God’s love from shining through us. If we are careful to remove whatever might hinder our testimony or tarnish our influence, Christ will ensure that our light accomplishes His purposes.
In contrast to the basket is the stand or candlestick. The Master may place you in a small, dark corner or on a humble stand, but one day, as He passes by, your light may illuminate His path as He goes to seek and save the lost. What is your stand? It could be your place in society, your role in your home, or your job in a business, factory, or school. Wherever it may be, it doesn’t matter as long as your light is shining steadily and clearly, guiding others on the path of life.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
O Christ, may the fire of Your divine love burn away our baskets. Help us to shine as lights in this dark world. Amen.
