There are many ways to understand the lovingkindness, or mercy, of the Lord. We can know it through doctrine. The best way to increase our knowledge of God’s infinite nature is by the careful study of His Word. It’s a weak faith that ignores doctrine. Just as bones are to the body, doctrine is essential to our moral and spiritual life. Just as law governs the physical universe, doctrine governs the spiritual. The doctrines of grace are the precious foundation of a holy life. Seek the ministry that builds upon them, and read the books that affirm them!
We can also know God’s lovingkindness through meditation. If only we would allow the Holy Spirit to still our restless minds and focus our thoughts on Christ’s love, which surpasses knowledge! It’s a love that chose us in eternity, has never let us go in time, and reached its highest expression in the wounds of Calvary. Finally, we can know God’s mercy through our experiences. The astronomer Kepler once said, “I have been thinking God’s thoughts after Him,” and every time we sacrifice ourselves for others or bear another’s burden, we experience a small echo of His love.
Do we praise God enough for His mercy and truth? We are quick to pray and cry out for help, but do we pause to list our blessings and give thanks for them? “Oh, that men would praise the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!” (Psalm 107:8, 15, 21, 31). How often have I awoken tired and discouraged, feeling weighed down like a lark beaten by the wind? Sometimes Bible study fails to inspire, and prayer feels cold and mechanical. But when I start to praise, to give thanks for past mercies and honor God’s majesty, my heart begins to warm, my spirit finds wings, and the clouds lift. Before long, the angel song of Hallelujah fills my soul. Praise transports us into God’s presence, where we find joy and gladness. Our sorrow and sighing are gone.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Father, You have loved us; You love us still; and You will love us forever. Your love is beyond comprehension. It’s like a warm, sunlit ocean surrounding the tiny island of my life. I swim in it but can never reach its limits. Thank You for its depths and endless reaches. Amen.
