TOPIC: The Holiday Spirit
TODAY’S BIBLE VERSE
And He said to them, “Come with Me privately to a solitary place, and let us rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat. — Mark 6:31
There is something within us that, at certain times, cries out for rest and renewal. We may love our home, our work, and the opportunity to contribute to the toil of this world, but when summer comes, we long to escape from the crowded city and hard work, yearning for rest. The love of nature is a sacred gift from God, and it is His voice that calls to us: “Come, My children, rejoice with Me. Breathe the scented air that I have passed through fields of clover, gorse, and heather; enjoy the woods, flowers, golden sunsets, and purple mountains; the majesty of the ocean and the peaceful shore.”
But to truly enjoy our holiday, we must be unselfish. It is tempting to seek the best return for our money, even at the expense of others. Always consider someone else—the short Zacchaeus who cannot see over your shoulder, the child who wants to look out of the carriage window, the invalid who cannot bear the draft, or the tired mother with restless children. Look for daily opportunities to show the gentleness, sweetness, and unselfishness of Jesus.
Make time to be alone. It’s a mistake to always be in the presence of others. The soul needs stillness and quiet. There are times when God’s voice is so deep and still that even the breathing of a companion can make it inaudible. But it is also wonderful to have a close friend with whom you can share sweet fellowship. “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” He will draw near and walk with you, and as He speaks to you along the way, your heart will burn within you.
Remember those in poverty, sickness, and need. Amid your joy and rest, send a portion to those who have nothing prepared (Nehemiah 8:10-12).
PRAYER OF THE DAY
What shall I render unto the Lord for all His benefits to me? I will praise, bless, and give thanks all the days of my life. You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory, honor, and power. Amen.
