BIBLE VERSE
So you will follow in the ways of the good, and keep to the paths of the righteous. — Prov 2:20
This chapter is full of references to ways and paths. The word “walk” appears three times, “paths” seven times, and “ways” five times. Here we read of the paths by which good and righteous people have walked before us. The Christian mystics of old loved to speak of the inward way and its various stages. They believed that God alone is the center and satisfaction of the human soul, and that we must journey along the path traversed by holy souls until we attain, like Monica, “Life in God and union there.”
True knowledge of God and union with Him can only be reached by those willing to face the perils and difficulties of the narrow way. It is not necessary to die to experience the inner secret of God—this path can be walked here in this life. It may be stony and steep, but when it reaches the summit and reveals the glory of heaven, the soul is satisfied. In the pursuit of true wisdom, God is eager to give, but we must sincerely desire it (Proverbs 2:1-9). Notice the many words urging us to seek: “Receive!” “Hide!” “Incline your ear!” “Apply your heart!” God’s treasures, like those in a mine, don’t lie on the surface, but no labor is more rewarding. Our Heavenly Father not only gives good things to those who ask, but He also becomes our Shield, Protector, and Guide (Proverbs 2:7-8).
These are the stages of the inner way, walked by the saints before us: detachment from worldly ambitions, passions, and sins; attachment to Christ in fellowship; illumination of the soul, revealing our unworthiness; and finally, union with God. Few experience the fullness of this journey, but those who have tell us that “no eye has seen, no ear has heard” what God reveals to those who love and wait for Him. But we must be prepared to sacrifice everything. Just as those who seek diamonds or gold endure hardships, so must we be willing to give up what others hold dear to pursue the knowledge of God.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Make us more aware, O Lord, of the indwelling of Your Holy Spirit. May He assure us that despite our sin, we are still Your children. May He help us to put to death the deeds of the body and to reckon ourselves dead to the temptations of the flesh. Amen.
