Today’s Scripture: …and the unclean spirits came out and entered the swine. The herd of about two thousand rushed down a steep bank into the sea, where they were drowned. – Mark 5:13

The scenes in this Gospel boggle the mind. There’s the gruesome spectacle of the “man from the tombs” (verse 2). He doesn’t just happen to live in the cemetery, he’s the walking dead—possessed by numerous demons. He seemingly keeps trying to kill and maim himself to end his misery. Nearby, two herdsmen tend a huge herd of 2,000 swine on a hill by the sea.

Enter Jesus, who sizes up the legion—the army of demons within the man. Jesus casts them into the swine, and they stampede to their destruction. Two herdsmen may have lost livelihoods, but they’ve just seen someone get his lost life back after an astonishing exorcism. The two swineherds run off to spread the news. And Jesus sends the healed man home.

Lord, may I never doubt the sublime muscle of God’s power against Satan’s paltry grip.
