Serve with good will, as to the Lord and not to men, — Eph 6:7
The common drudgery of daily life can be a Divine Calling. We often speak of a young man “being called to the Ministry,” but it is just as fitting to speak of a carpenter being called to the bench, the blacksmith to the forge, and the shoemaker to his workbench. “Brethren,” said the Apostle, “let every man wherein he is called, therein abide with God.”
Remember that your life has been appointed by God’s wise providence. God sent Joseph as much to the drudgery of the prison as to the glory of the palace. Nothing happens to us that is not part of His plan for us, and the moments that seem the most tiresome are often the ones that shape us into nobler and stronger people.
We are called to be faithful in performing the duties assigned to us. Not brilliance, not success, not fame that catches the world’s attention, but the regular, quiet, and careful completion of small, everyday tasks. Faithfulness in what seems insignificant is as great in God’s sight as faithfulness in what seems monumental.
In every honest task, no matter how tiresome or mundane, we are co-laborers with God. He provides the growth of the crops, but humans must reap, thresh, grind the flour, and bake the bread. The tailor is God’s co-worker in clothing the bodies He has made. The builder cooperates with God in housing His children. The merchant helps bring the products of the world to those who need them. God uses humans in countless ways to serve one another.
So take up your work, even if you feel like a nobody, a drudge, a mere worker in the background. Do it with a brave heart, remembering that the Lord spent many years as a carpenter. In every action of life, set the Lord before you. Do all things as in His presence and for His approval. Cultivate a spirit of love for God and others. Look for ways to encourage your fellow workers. Do not grumble or complain, but let your heart rise from your tasks to God, your Maker and Friend. Then even the most humble work will shine like grass blades glistening in the morning dew.
