DAILY BIBLE VERSE
Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah with crimson-stained garments? Who is this robed in splendor, marching in the greatness of His strength? “It is I, proclaiming vindication, mighty to save.” — Isa 63:1 BSB
We can never speak of our Lord as He deserves! We draw from the richest metaphors of Scripture, the ideals of poets, and the masterpieces of art, yet none suffice. We reflect on the writings of the saints and meditate on His words until our hearts burn, but eventually, we return to the daily tasks, knowing that we have Him, yet unable to express who He truly is. We wait eagerly for the day when the veil will part, and we shall see Him as He is.
This longing for Christ has characterized every age, breaking forth in transcendent expressions. Among them, Isaiah’s vision is one of the most inspiring. Standing on the foothills of Judea, looking south toward Edom, the prophet is startled by a majestic figure approaching. A mighty conqueror emerges, moving slowly and majestically across the desert wastes. His face is set toward the Judean frontier, and He is clearly alone. Whether He had led an army or triumphed without one is not immediately clear, but He approaches with the greatness of His strength. The prophet calls out in astonishment, “Who is this coming from Edom?” The answer echoes back, “I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save!”
This is no enemy, but a mighty ally, and much more. The word “save” removes all fear and fills the heart with hope. Notice the special aspect of Jesus in this scene. It is not Christ on the Cross, but Christ in His resurrection and ascension glory. He stands between us and the powers of the flesh, for which Edom is a symbol. He is not just the forgiver of sin but the conqueror of all sin. He is not only victorious for Himself but is responsible for all who trust in Him.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Lord Jesus Christ, Captain of Salvation, You see the malice and work of evil spirits against my soul. I ask You to deliver me from the many temptations and trials that surround me. Make a way for me to escape, help me with Your mighty power, and make me more than a conqueror. Amen.
