Finally, all of you, be like-minded and sympathetic, love as brothers, be tenderhearted and humble. — 1 Pet 3:8
It would be rare to find a community on earth that fully embodies the virtues described in these verses. Yet nothing less than this is the Christian ideal, and it would be well if, without waiting for others, each one of us adopted these precepts as our rule for daily living. This would be our most powerful witness to the world and would hasten the coming of the Kingdom of our Lord. The Apostle’s use of the word “finally” reminds us that all Christian doctrine is meant to lead to this life of love, which is boldly outlined in these words.
The general principle is clear: “Be of one mind, having compassion for one another.” Unity does not require uniformity of thought but unity of spirit. We may never hold the same opinions, but we can be united in a shared devotion to Christ that transcends differences.
Consider the specific applications.
Love as brethren. Love is not the same as liking someone. We are not asked whom we would like to have as brothers or sisters—that is decided for us—but we are commanded to love them regardless of personal preferences. Love does not begin in emotions but in the will. It’s not about feeling but about doing; not about sentiment but about action; not about soft words but about selfless deeds.
Be pitiful. How often did our Lord’s compassion shine forth in the Gospels—whether for the weak, the hungry crowds, or the suffering who sought His help? May we have His heart of compassion.
Be courteous. This means being willing to take the least comfortable place, letting others have the seat while you stand. Let the manners of your Heavenly Father’s court be evident in your daily life. Through this, the world will learn that Christianity is not only about the heroism of great acts but also about the kindness of daily living.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
Blessed Lord, I ask You to pour down upon me such grace that it may not only cleanse my life but also beautify it according to Your will. Grant that I may love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love my neighbor as myself. Amen.
