Daily Bible Verse for Today 22nd October 2024 – The Promise Of The Holy Spirit

‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out My Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. — Acts 2:17

In his sermon on the Day of Pentecost, the Apostle Peter quoted the latter part of Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28). Little is known about Joel, who likely lived in Judah during the reign of Uzziah. Yet his prophecy of the outpouring of the Divine Spirit found fulfillment in the memorable events that marked the birth of the Christian Church.

Before Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended only upon chosen individuals of the Hebrew people—such as Abraham, Moses, Samuel, Elijah, Isaiah, and other prophets. This supreme gift of God was reserved for the spiritual elite of Israel, those called to high office and responsibility as kings, prophets, or leaders. But Joel foresaw a time when the Holy Spirit, previously reserved for the few, would be poured out on the many. The young men and women would prophesy, even the slaves and the most despised in society would partake of this divine experience.

Whatever Pentecost means, it is now open to all. “Every one of you,” Peter said, “shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:38-39). Let us take this to heart.

Years ago, electricity was a privilege enjoyed by only a few, but now even the poorest can benefit from it. In a similar way, Pentecost represents the truth that the power and gifts of the Eternal Spirit are now available to even the feeblest hands willing to receive them. But first, there must be a putting away of evil, an emptying of our hearts, and a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness before we can claim our share in the gift made once for all to the Church but must be received by each individual believer.

PRAYER OF THE DAY
Let Your Holy Spirit dwell in me continually, O Lord, and make me Your temple and sanctuary. Amen.
