Summary:
We all have a choice as to how we live our lives. We can either choose a lifestyle that pleases God, or one that only pleases ourselves. A distinguishing mark of the new covenant is that we have the Holy Spirit who works in us and empowers us to do things that are pleasing to God; these are the very things that we are not capable of doing on our own.

Notes:
1. We find power, purpose, and direction when we decide to cooperate with, not fight against, God. Allowing the Holy Spirit to teach us how to live frees us from guilt and accusations that we’re inadequate and not enough.
2. When the Holy Spirit is working in us, He begins doing things in us that we’re incapable of doing on our own. Under the new covenant, we get the Teacher, the Helper, the Comforter, and the Guide. It’s impossible to live the Christian life without Him.
3. God doesn’t condemn us when we make mistakes, but instead reaches out to defend us. However, there’s a difference between making mistakes and settling into a lifestyle of sin. Sin is offensive to God. Even though He still loves us when we sin, we can’t use His love for us as an excuse to continue sinning.
4. The Holy Spirit can change our desires, but first we must want to change and please God.
5. The world wants to turn God’s grace into lasciviousness and remove all restraints. Wicked people pervert grace and try to twist it into something it’s not. Grace doesn’t condone ungodliness; it teaches us to refuse it. Grace isn’t a license to sin, but the answer to it.
