TOPIC: A Striving After Wind
TEXT: Ecclesiastes 6:7-12(NKJV)
7. All the labor of man [is] for his mouth, And yet the soul is not satisfied.
- For what more has the wise [man] than the fool? What does the poor man have, Who knows [how] to walk before the living?
-
Better [is] the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire. This also [is] vanity and grasping for the wind.
-
Whatever one is, he has been named already, For it is known that he [is] man; And he cannot contend with Him who is mightier than he.
-
Since there are many things that increase vanity, How [is] man the better?
-
For who knows what [is] good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he passes like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will happen after him under the sun?
Anglican Daily Fountain Devotional 4 November 2021 STUDY:
The “Preacher” in this section uses another mind-blowing phrase to describe the activities of men under the sun, especially the pursuit of wealth and other worldly things. He calls it “striving after the wind (v.9). Nobody can catch the wind; this means that the more people pursue worldly things, the more they get frustrated. No wonder he says that someone who is poor but wise and who is satisfied with what his eyes see is better than someone whose appetite is never satisfied (vv. 7-9). Humans cannot change what God has ordained (vv. 10-11).
In a time like ours that is characterised by the pursuit of wealth, we need to ponder over these matters. As Paul said, many have actually injured themselves and “fallen into all kinds of temptation and snares, into senseless and hurtful desires that plunge into ruin and destruction”(1 Tim. 6:9). Put your absolute trust in Christ and you will find peace of mind.
PRAYER: Heavenly Father. destroy this worldly craving in me that makes me chase after the wind. May my trust be in You alone. Amen.
