Out text today begins with the time transfiguration of Jesus occurred “after six days” (v. l). What happened then, I supposed, was the discussion in Matthew 16:21 when Jesus informed His disciples of His suffering, death and resurrection. This certainly didn’t go down well with them as seen in Peter’s response in Matthew 16:22. To them, Christ, the Son of God, shouldn’t suffer pain and death. They were discouraged, and had doubts about Jesus’ true identity. To encourage them, Jesus scheduled a mountain top experience.
This higher level of intimacy and communion with God in a separated place, revealed the divine nature of Jesus, as his flesh was transformed into a glorious body. The presence of Moses and Elijah aIso indicated their affirmation of Christ as the fulfilment of the law and the prophets. Having been reassured, the disciples expressed their conviction of the deity and divinity of Christ in John 1:14 and 2 Peter 1:16.
When life’s complications and confusion bring doubt and uncertainty on our faith and beliefs, we, like the disciples, must remember that we are called up to a place of higher intimacy and communion with God, for our transfiguration which is accomplished by the renewal ofour minds. And by intimate fellowship with unveiled faces beholding the glory of the Lord, we are transformed into the same image, from glory to glory.
PRAYER: Lord, please bring me into a higher level of intimacy and communion with you so that my life will be transformed. Amen.
