TOPIC: AVOIDING THE WRONG COMPANY
SCRIPTURE: Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. 1 Corinthians 15:33
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: If someone will not follow you to heaven, do not follow them to hell.
The wrong company has destructive effects on life and destiny. It affects both our physical life and our spiritual wellbeing. That is why one of the most critical steps one can take in establishing a strong relationship with God is the willingness to avoid or disconnect from the wrong company.
Many people began well with God but eventually returned to their old ways because they remained connected to wrong influenges that pulled hem away from God.
The Scripture warns in 1 Corinthians 15:33: Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.
Evil associations, whether friendships, relationships, or social circles, have the capacity to corrupt godly character and weaken spiritual conviction.
For this reason, every believer must carefully evaluate the relationships of their life. Beloved, are you surrounded with people who mock your faith, tempt you to sin, or pressure you to return to your former lifestyle? There are relationships that require caution and, in some cases, total separation.
Jesus emphasized the seriousness of removing anything that leads a person into sin in Matthew 5:30, And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast it from thee: … If the Lord Himself says we should be willing to cut off a part of our own body to avoid sin, how much more should we be willing to cut off harmful relationships?
Again, in Matthew 18:8, Jesus said, …it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. The message is clear: it is better to lose a relationship than to lose your soul.
If someone will not follow you to heaven, do not follow them to hell. If they will not follow you to serve God, do not follow them to serve the devil. Never respect anyone enough to allow them cause you to offend God, whether it is your brother, your father, or anyone else for that matter.
Many years ago, I returned from the university and visited my father who at the time had a keg of palm wine before him. We chatted for a while, and when his glass got empty, he asked me to refill it from the keg. Immediately, I was torn in between two opposing courses of action – obedience or disobedience. If I refused, it might appear as disobedience. But if l obeyed, I would be acting contrary to my conviction and the Word of God.
Before I could respond, he said, “Oh! Sorry, you are not supposed to touch it. Your type doesn’t touch this anymore.” He knew my life had changed, and he respected my conviction. It is not possible to grow in the palace and not drink palm wine, but he knew that I had decided to follow God wholeheartedly.
Beloved, one of the ways to maintain your spirituality is the courage to separate from anything or anyone that competes with your attention and dextion to God. Your relationship with God must take priority over every other relationship.
REMEMBER THIS: If someone will not follow you to heaven, do not follow them to hell.
ASSIGNMENT(S):
1. Examine your relationships and identify any association that tampers with your walk with God.
2. Set healthy boundaries where necessary and disconnect from harmful influences.
3. Make a fresh commitment to place your relationship with God above every other relationship.
PRAYER: Father, I receive the grace to separate from every relationship and influence that affect my relationship with You. Help me to stand for righteousness without compromise and to value my salvation above every earthly attachment, Lord, in Jesus’ Name.
