TOPIC: A Good Thing

“He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD.” — Proverbs 18:22 (NIV)

One sentence. Two declarations. The whole thing said plainly.

The word for good here in the Hebrew is ṭôḇ — the same word God used in Genesis 1 when He looked at what He had made and called it good. It is a foundational word, a word that places marriage in the category of God’s original creative intention. Not merely useful. Not merely practical. Good — in the deepest, most theologically loaded sense of the word. The kind of good that carries God’s pleasure in it.

The word finds is active. Someone who finds has been looking. This is not stumbling into a good thing by accident but pursuing one with discernment and intention. The wisdom literature is consistent here — good things require the kind of seeking that knows what it is looking for. Proverbs 31:10 asks “a wife of noble character, who can find?” — the question implies that finding her is not easy, that she is worth searching for, that the search itself is a serious undertaking.

And then the verse connects what has been found to what God gives: receives favor from the LORD. The Hebrew word is rāṣôn — God’s delight, His benevolent disposition, His pleasure turned toward a person. Psalm 5:12 says God surrounds the righteous with this favor as with a shield. The same divine favor that surrounds the righteous, Proverbs 18:22 says, rests on the person who finds a good wife. Marriage is not merely a human institution that God tolerates. It is something God actively delights in.

What God calls a good thing is worth finding carefully, entering reverently, and keeping faithfully.

This verse speaks differently to different readers depending on where they are in life.

For those who are still searching — there is something worth knowing here: the pursuit is not just romantic, it is spiritual. God has a personal interest in this. His favor rests on it. That is not a reason to be careless in the search — it is a reason to bring God into the centre of it, to seek with wisdom rather than just with feeling, to understand that who you find will shape the whole trajectory of your life and your walk with God.

For those already married — this verse is a reminder of what you have been given. A good marriage is a ṭôḇ — a Genesis-1-grade good thing, something God looked at and called excellent. That does not mean it is without difficulty. It means that beneath the difficulty, beneath the seasons of friction and misalignment and the daily labour of loving another person well, there is something fundamentally, divinely good. It deserves to be treated as such — not taken for granted, not neglected, not allowed to drift as though it will maintain itself.

Marriage in the Hebrew tradition was a covenant — a binding, serious, sacred commitment that mirrors the covenant love between God and His people. Ephesians 5 makes this explicit: husbands are to love their wives as Christ loved the church. The depth of what Proverbs 18:22 is pointing to is not just a pleasant domestic arrangement. It is the human institution that most closely reflects the divine-human relationship.

God calls it a good thing. Take care of it accordingly.

Father, I receive this verse today as a reminder of how You see marriage — not as a social convention but as a good thing, a ṭôḇ, something carrying Your delight and Your favor. Let me never take lightly what You call good.

For those who are married: give them eyes to see their spouse today as a gift of Your favor — not just on the easy days but especially on the hard ones. Renew the covenant love between them. Let them treat what they have been given with the care that a good thing deserves. Where marriages have grown dry or distant, water them today with Your grace.

For those who are searching: let them search with wisdom and with You at the centre of the search. Guard them from the urgency that settles for less than what You intend. Let them trust Your timing and Your guidance, knowing that Your favor rests on this pursuit when it is done rightly.

And for all of us — let marriage in our lives and in our communities reflect something of the covenant love You have always had for Your people. Good, faithful, enduring. In Jesus’ name — Amen.

  • The word “good” (ṭôḇ) is the same word God used in Genesis 1. If marriage is a Genesis-1-grade good thing carrying God’s approval, how does that change the way you think about and treat your marriage — or your pursuit of one? Are you treating it with the weight that “good” deserves?
  • The verse says a person “receives favor from the LORD” — not just happiness or companionship but divine favor. How conscious are you that God has a personal interest in your marriage or your search for one? In what specific ways could you invite Him more intentionally into that area of your life today?
  • Whether you are married or searching — what is one practical thing you could do today to honour what God calls a good thing? For the married: one deliberate act of love or gratitude. For those searching: one area where you could bring more wisdom and prayer into how you are approaching the search.
