Facing Challenges

Today’s Reading
1 Samuel 17:32-50
David said, “This day the Lord will deliver you into my hands, and . . . the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.” – 1 Samuel 17:46 (NIV)
The story of David and Goliath is a timeless example of courage and faith. David faced Goliath with only a sling, five smooth stones, and an unwavering trust in God. While Israel’s army trembled in fear, David boldly proclaimed victory — not by his strength but because the battle belonged to the Lord. David’s confidence came from recalling God’s past deliverance. He had faced lions and bears while tending sheep, and this history of God’s faithfulness assured him of victory against Goliath. From David’s story, I have learned three lessons: faith leads to victory, God’s past faithfulness inspires confidence, and bold faith encourages others.
We all encounter “giants” of our own — overwhelming challenges that test our faith. But 2 Chronicles 20:15 reminds us, “Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” When we trust in God’s power rather than our own, no challenge is insurmountable.
Let’s identify the “giants” in our own lives — fear, doubt, or impossible challenges — and surrender them to God, trusting God’s power to deliver us. We can declare God’s strength and faithfulness just as David did.
