TOPIC: The Day of the Lord!

OPENING PRAYER: Oh Lord, fill me with the power of the Holy Ghost as I study your word.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE: AMOS 5:18-27

18 Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord!
For what good is the day of the Lord to you?
It will be darkness, and not light.
19 It will be as though a man fled from a lion,
And a bear met him!
Or as though he went into the house,
Leaned his hand on the wall,
And a serpent bit him!
20 Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light?
Is it not very dark, with no brightness in it?

21 “I hate, I despise your feast days,
And I do not savor your sacred assemblies.
22 Though you offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings,
I will not accept them,
Nor will I regard your fattened peace offerings.
23 Take away from Me the noise of your songs,
For I will not hear the melody of your stringed instruments.
24 But let justice run down like water,
And righteousness like a mighty stream.

25 “Did you offer Me sacrifices and offerings
In the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
26 You also carried [a]Sikkuth[b] your king
And Chiun, your idols,
The star of your gods,
Which you made for yourselves.
27 Therefore I will send you into captivity beyond Damascus,”
Says the Lord, whose name is the God of hosts.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q5: Is there any warning for me to heed?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 27 January 2024 – MESSAGE

The people had not heeded the earlier call to repentance (vs.6,14, and 15), but appeared to be looking forward to the Day of the Lord (v.18). Hence the Day of the Lord will bring sorrow from which they will surely not escape (vs.19-20).

They had assumed that provided they were carrying out their religious duties, bringing offerings to God, all will be well with them. But they were proved wrong (vs.21-23). God does not delight in sacrifices that are not from a humble and repentant heart (Psalm 51:17). We too may make the same mistake today. We may fail to heed God’s call for repentance and yielding our lives to Jesus (Revelation 3:20). It is wrong to think that if we only attend Church regularly, sing praises to God, pay our tithes and offerings, we would be prepared for the Day of our Lord’s return, and even long for that day. We would meet the same fate as the Israelites (v.18b).

What does v.25 tell us about God? Similarly, we are saved by grace through faith and not by works so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). But the way we live must show that we have been saved (v.21).

Practice/Word Application
Memorise v.24. How can you make sure that this is fulfilled in your home, workplace, or church?
