Lutheran Daily Devotional July 2, 2023 Sunday Message. As you study today’s devotional, remember this; “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (NLT)

TOPIC: Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus

“Let us also live with Jesus. He has risen from the dead, That to life we may awaken. Jesus, You are now our Head. We are Your own living members; where You live, there we shall be, In Your presence constantly, living there with You forever. Jesus, let me faithful be, life eternal grant to me.”

What do we ask for in our prayers? What petitions do we bring before God? We may plead for healing and health or that financial worries would be resolved. We ask that God would protect our friends and family members and bring peace to this troubled world. Our hymn verse offers two important prayers, petitions to bring daily before the throne of grace. The first prayer is “Jesus, let me faithful be.” The second is “Life eternal grant to me.” The answers to both petitions are found in Jesus, our risen and exalted Savior.

In Jesus, we see what it means to be faithful. Faithful to His Father’s will, Jesus took up His cross to suffer and die for our sins, for every faithless sin of thought, word, and action. The faithful Son of God was raised to life “that to life we may awaken.” Baptized into Jesus’ death and resurrection, we are raised to a new life in which we are called to faithfulness, a mark of the Holy Spirit’s work within us. As we live in a way that is faithful to the Lord and His Word, we may face the disdain and ridicule of the unbelieving world. Jesus’ faithfulness led Him to the cross, and we must take up the cross and follow Him. A life of faithfulness is not always easy. We may struggle with fear and doubt. When we stumble, we repent of our sins, knowing that God “is faithful and just to forgive us our sins” (1 John 1:9b).

Our second prayer is “Life eternal grant to me.” Eternal life is a gift of God’s grace through faith in Jesus. As the hymn reminds us, Jesus is the Head of His body, the church: “You are now our Head. We are Your own living members; where You live, there we shall be.” Those words reflect Jesus’ promise: “I will come again and will take you to Myself, that where I am you may be also” (John 14:3b). Our Savior has promised to bring us into His eternal presence and His faithfulness will never fail: “Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it” (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).

WE PRAY: Lord Jesus, help me to be faithful and grant to me eternal life. Amen.

This Daily Devotion was written by Dr. Carol Geisler. It is based on the hymn, “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus,” which is number 685 in the Lutheran Service Book.

Reflection Questions:

1. Do you pray in a certain way, or do you just kind of “wing it”?

2. How are we “living members” of Christ’s body?

3. Do you pray that God makes you more like Jesus? If so, what qualities of Jesus would you like to see more active in your life?
