Outline: This second part of the prophecy addresses the people of Jerusalem in the plural form, ”you” (v.16). In the same verse, the idea of God’s judgment is likened to a drunk person. The image of ”drunk” on my holy mountain could mean the outpouring of God’s wrath (Psalm 75:8; Jeremiah 25:15–29).

Note in v.17 God’s promise of restoration/deliverance The NRSV expresses the idea of salvation with the phrase “on mount Zion, there shall be those that escape”, the theme of salvation for a small group or a remnant (Isaiah 4:2; 10:20). “The house of Jacob will possess its inheritance.” What does this mean? It is a promise that Israelites will have the opportunity to claim their territorial possessions. After the destruction of Jerusalem, the neighbouring people took possession of Judah’s land.

The judgment against Edom will result in the restoration of the land belonging to the people of Judah. Similarly, v.18, continues with the promise of the restoration of Judah with the language of fire and destruction.

The prophet clearly stated that the enemies of Israel will be utterly destroyed with no survivors from the house of Esau. Edom will be destroyed, and Judah will actively participate in the process of destruction. Read vv.19–20. Edom is judged for taking some of the lands belonging to Judah.
