Scripture Union Daily Guide 7 June 2024 – MESSAGE
Increasingly in most part of the world, workers are suffering in the hands of employers who treat them badly. They must work long hours and hard in terrible working conditions for a very poor pay. Our God is not a bad employer! The priests were well remunerated for their work. We read of the provisions made for those who serve at the altar to, “share in what is offered at the altar.” (1 Corinthians 9:13).
There are other benefits in addition (see Deuteronomy 18:1-5). These are factors we need to bear in mind regarding those we employ as priests and pastors in our different churches and in all other full-time Christian ministries. It is important that we should make adequate provision for the welfare of their families. It is sad, especially, when children grow up wishing their parents had not been involved in Christian work because they had to grow up in serious physical hardship.
Unfortunately, God’s provision is not enough for some Christian workers. Like the children of Eli (1 Samuel 2), they take what God has not allotted to them. Not surprisingly, they come to a sad end!
